A Raft on Pile Foundation combines the benefits of both raft foundations and pile foundations. This system is designed to transfer the load of a structure to deeper, more stable soil layers while also distributing the weight over a wider area, especially when surface soils are weak or unstable. In this system, piles are driven into the ground to provide support, and a raft (or mat) is placed over the piles to evenly distribute the load across the entire structure.
The concept of combining raft foundations and pile foundations was particularly popularized in the 1960s (around 1966) for use in large, high-rise buildings, bridges, and other major construction projects. It became essential in regions with poor soil conditions, where traditional shallow foundations would not suffice.
